Swine Flu Precautions for Your Preschool!

By Kelly Mayberry

Childcare location across the country are looking for ways to manage the H1N1 virus before they reach pandemic proportions. The Center for Disease Control is working closely with the National Association of Education of Young People to protect children at many child care and day care facilities throughout the United States.

The best way to be prepared is to sanitize everything possible to prevent the spread of an outbreak before it starts. Brilliance Preschool and Academy makes sure that every single toy is cleaned and sanitized at the end of each and every day. As every early childhood education center should, the academy goes above and beyond normal practices to insure a germ-free environment. The operators understand that the health and safety of your child should be their number one priority.

Schools should follow the published guides by the CDC on how to protect their student body. Anyone who handles children under the age of five years of age are encouraged to get vaccinated; since this age group has the highest risk levels for the H1NI virus. See if your child's school has plans to have all their staff members receive their shots. It would also be wise to check with your pediatrician to see if your child needs to be vaccinated.

The CDC also recommends that all preschools have an emergency plan in place in case there is an outbreak of swine flu in the building. The plan should include provisions to immediately notify all parents and that communication should advise parents that it is essential to keep students home if they begin to display flu like symptoms. The CDC reports that the "symptoms of 2009 H1N1 flu virus can include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, and fatigue, and sometimes diarrhea and vomiting."

When you visit your preschool you should see posters around the building encouraging the children to practice good hygiene. Materials are available from the government and the NAEYP free of charge, which reinforce the importance of hand washing and covering the nose and mouth when sneezing. Despite the best efforts of any school it still may become necessary at some point to close to control any outbreak. The CDC says if too many children or staff members become ill the best course of action will be to shutdown for 5 to 7 days. - 30531

College Students Lifestyles in the New Millennium

By Adriana Noton

What are the college students' lifestyles like in this new millennium? For that matter, how has the college students' lifestyle changed since the year 2000?

I was on a university campus a few years ago and all the students walked around with a cell phone glued to their head. Today it is all about texting the person sitting next to you I would guess.

Yesterday a major university in California experienced a peaceful protest. Students, angry about a rate in public education tuition locked arms and blocked the door exits to the board or regents who were meeting on campus. Listen, if kids want to protest that is their business but it seems the only thing that riles these college students these days is when the state raises tuition.

I remember a bill board off the freeway out here a few years ago. It was a photo of two young people a boy and a girl. The girl was wearing a head band and a tie die t-shirt like a grateful dead head concert hanger on.

She was sitting on the shoulders of a young guy similarly dressed. He was shouting something and she was shouting with her fist in the air, the headline read fight for your right to free checking. It was an ad taken out by a bank advertising checking accounts without service fees.

These were models of course posing for the advertising agency connected to the bank. And it was a bit of a joke of using people who looked like sixties rebels to advertise for the bank. But college students are more concerned these days with their bank accounts than with changing the world as college kids back in the sixties were.

This is not a knock against the college students of today. It is never too early to worry about your income and how you are going to make a living. But when there is a war in the middle east; the government changing our health care system against the will of the people; when the government is using tax payer money to bail out the banks which regularly practice usury credit lending practices by increasing interest rates on existing credit balances, sometimes tripling the rates on their whim, we seem not to hear much of a protest from college students.

But when the college students lifestyles are hit in their pocket book they are sure to rally and make their voices heard. What they do not know is that those who raise their tuition have one response. They say if you do not like it then do not go to school here. College students today do not realize that when it comes to money there will always be someone who can afford tuition if they cannot. Step aside if you all you want to do is whine. When you learn that protesting is about the rights of others and not yourselves perhaps your arm locking will get you more than a two minute story on the five o'clock news. - 30531

The Benefits of Personal Faculties Over Public Schools

By George Wang

The education system in America is in atrocious times. The low pay that most faculty systems offer is one of the main causes. There's very small in the way of incentives for folks to wish to take up teaching as the vocation wants so much and gives so very little in return. This has lead to an emergency in the public education system making it hard for the faculties to operate at the maximum for the scholars that are concerned. The lack of teachers suggests that almost all the students will not get the one on one attention that's so despairingly needed in today. This is the rationale why so many oldsters are turning to the private faculties to get their kids the absolute best in the way of education. The edges that the non-public faculties have over the public school system are giant. The one on one attention that is given to the students is actually beneficial for the whole workings of the faculty. Usually the students are given much more attention and will in turn perform better when it comes time for the work to be performed on their lonesome. This also allows for the students to spend longer on the subject matter before heading off to bring the scholars up to the same pace before a new lesson is learned. This is one of the reasons the public schools are so regularly failing when it comes to individual education secrets.

They are rushed through the lessons to keep going and ensure that all of the material is covered as set down by the regime. The private faculties don't fall under the same ideas and therefore have an simpler less complicated time having the facility to cover the lessons without leaving plenty of the kids behind to try and understand for themselves. The private school systems are miles more appealing to the teachers of the Earth too.

As there's more space for education and a ton less room for politics in the personal college systems the teachers are tons more interested in making sure that each student is above par in each subject. Barring any special circumstances that have been laid down by the law, the private school systems aren't needed to play a role in the homogenized testing that is so well liked in the public college system. This has made it that much more attractive when it comes to the techniques that are being taught in the non-public schools.

While many of them are based around a faith, there are a latest crop of faculties that are said to be charter schools which offer all the benefits of the private school system but are not faith based establishments. This has turned into a truly well liked occurrence in the education world. These new charter universities are turning up all over the country, some of which are at once hooked up to a particular university for higher education.

Standing tall against the opposition, non-public faculties have managed to gain the support of thousands and the possibilities for a better education that they offer are massive. The genuine downfall is the price that's concerned as the non-public universities aren't supported by the taxation policy so they depend on the price of the teaching to remain afloat annually. - 30531

How to Prepare Your Child for the School Entrance Test

By Adriana Noton

Whether your child is planning to attend high school or a private school, they are likely to have to take an entrance test. ISEE and SSATs are mandatory for students who want to attend private schools in the US. Schools are essentially looking to assess a child's reasoning skills, reading comprehension, language, and math skills for before they permit a child acceptance into the school. It is essential that parents be supportive in what they can do to help their child prepare for a school entrance test.

The following is a list of tips on preparing your child for the school entrance test:

1. If you have extra money, consider hiring a tutor, especially a tutor for an area that your child may be having difficulties. There are tutors in such areas as reading, math, English, and the sciences. A tutor will give your child that extra bit of help so that he or she is ready on the day of the exam.

2. There are many online websites that offer free testing exercises and free online tutoring classes on nearly every topic. These sites are very useful when preparing for an entrance test.

3. It is important to be aware that entrance tests do not allow students to use calculators, so your child needs to have strong math skills prior to taking the test. There are many books and online sites that offer math skill preparation exercises so that a child can practice for the test.

4. It is important that you encourage your child to read. They have to be aware of the importance of reading a variety of books such as history books, science books, biographies and much more. Consider acquiring a pocket dictionary such as an electronic dictionary to help them with difficult words. Reading also helps them get a better understanding of grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, sentence structure and more.

5. Encourage your child to write and edit their own work. This will help them develop strong spelling, grammar, and vocabulary skills. When using a computer, spell check is a helpful tool. As well, get your child to read their writing aloud to pick up on their mistakes. Your child should be in the habit of proofreading. Acquire a Grammar manual to help your child develop strong grammar skills.

6. Help your child by acquiring sample entrance tests that he or she can take to practice for the real exam. It will also help reduce anxiety about actually taking the real test.

7. When your child prepares for the entrance test, make sure that preparing does not consist of memorizing. If the child understands the fundamentals, than he or she will do better. It is also a better way to learn and what they learn will be remembered.

If you want to get your child into a quality school, you have to make sure that he or she is properly prepared. As well, private schools are very competitive so the child needs to gain a competitive edge over the other applicants. You should be supportive and positive as he or she prepares for the test. Preparing children now will prepare them for a successful educational future, which includes college and university. - 30531

Are there more Independent Schools in Canada?

By Adriana Noton

In recent years, Canada has seen an increase in the number of independent schools. These schools have been popping up across the county as more people are becoming frustrated with the public school system. An independent school, often referred to as a private school, is a school that is not governed by the government. In other words, it does not rely on tax payer money to operate. It can be funded buy such methods as student tuition, donations, gifts, endowments, etc. A Board of Directors will govern the particular independent school. There may be some government funding such as a grant, but the school is still independent.

The terms of the school to operate usually include: graduating students will become productive members of society, the school contains the curriculum to make students eligible for college and university, and the school must meet the curriculum standards of the province where it resides.

In Canada, there are thousands of independent schools across the country. For instance, in Ontario, there are more than 900 Independent Schools with 120, 000 students enrolled. Independent schools can be a religious orientated school such as a Christian school, Boarding school, Military school, Day school, Montessori school, and Special needs school. Independent schools by region include Alberta private schools, British Columbia private schools, Maritimes private schools, Ontario private schools, and Quebec private schools. Schools by city include Calgary private schools, Montreal private schools, Ottawa private schools, Toronto private schools, Vancouver private schools, and Victoria private schools.

The independent school a parent chooses for their child will depend on their child's particular needs. This can include location, budget, and the type of independent school such is as if they want to enroll the child in a Christian school. As well, when considering a boarding school, this type of school teaches, houses, and feeds the students. The students live at the private boarding school.

Parents choose independent schools for a number of reasons. They are unhappy with the public education system and want their child to have a better education. They want their child to learn in a religious environment. There are particular programs such as an extensive music program that are not offered in public schools. They want the best educational tools available such as quality texts and educational materials, small classroom sizes, and a more personalized teaching method. As well, the parents would like to be more involved in their child's education and the policies and programs being offered by the independent school.

There are now many independent schools located across Canada to meet the needs of all Canadian students and their parents. Often times a student will have to take an entrance exam to gain admittance into an independent school, so it is important for parents to acquire the entrance criteria for entrance in the particular school that they are considering sending their child.

Due to the growing concern about the state of the Canadian public education system, more parents are seeking to enroll their children in an independent school. The benefit of an independent school makes your financial investment your child's life investment. - 30531

Some Comparisons Between Private Schools and Public Schools in Canada

By Adriana Noton

In Canada, children are required by law to attend school until they reach the age of 16. They can attend their local public school for free, as paid for by tax dollars. However, some parents choose to send their kids to private school instead of public school, with the belief that they are offering them a better education. Are private schools better than public schools, or are they simply equal? Does private education bring enough benefits to make the cost worthwhile? Do the two types of schools really compete with one another?

Private Schools Have Admission Requirements

When you send your child to the local public school, he will be attending school with anyone, regardless of their ability, personality, religious belief, or other characteristics. This can be good, but parents who wish to focus their children in a certain direction find that independent school gives them that chance. Private schools are able to post admission requirements. Students may have to hold to a specific religious creed, have a certain academic ability, or conform to a set of behaviour standards in order to attend a private school. For many parents, this is a huge benefit.

Private Schools Have Better Student/Teacher Ratios

Canada's public schools are overcrowded. T his causes many parents to send their kids to private schools. Most private schools have smaller class sizes, which allows the teacher to spend more one-on-one time with the students. This helps the students get more out of their educational experience.

Both Offer Standardized Testing

Both public and private schooling outcomes are measured through standardized testing. In this way, the two compete with one another. On average, Canadian private school students perform better than public school students on standardized testing. However, this may have just as much to do with the student demographic as it does with the quality of education. Factors such as stable family life, small class sizes, and more involved parents will contribute to higher average test scores in the private school sector.

Private Schools Are Better Ranked

While there are good and bad private schools, in general, private schools tend to rank higher than public schools. For example, he Fraser Institute ranks most private schools higher than public schools. Perhaps the prestigious nature of some of these schools draws better teachers, or the smaller student-to-teacher ratio improves the learning abilities of the students. Some private schools are better because they have a more intense curriculum. They do not have to use a curriculum that includes students of all ability levels like a public school does. A "college prep" program in a private school is expected to be challenging and strenuous, as compared to the "general education" provided in a public school.

So which is the best option for your family? Only you can decide that. Private school provides an excellent foundation for your child if he intends to head to college someday, and a private education allows you to avoid some of the problems with Canada's public schools, but it is an extra expense in your family's budget. The best way to make the choice is to visit the schools in your area and see which ones offer the best education for your child, helping you reach your goals of her future. - 30531
